Digg is launching several new features this morning that signal a strategic shift in the company’s all news focus to date. They’ve added a podcasting content area, enhanced the video area and are signalling that new content areas are coming as well. Among the changes, users will now be able to consume audio and video content directly on Digg. Another key feature addition is the launch of “Top 10 Stories,” which is a quick view of the ten hottest stories on Digg at any given time. See TechCrunch for the full story and screenshots.

I spoke to Digg founder Kevin Rose, CEO Jay Adelson and VP Marketing Mike Maser for a few minutes to talk about the changes. We also discussed how Digg acquired the SpikeTheVote domain name, Digg’s current user stats, their upcoming financing and other issues.

Although these enhancements fail to meet the expectations of some Diggers, they are another step in making the whole Digg experience more streamlined. Podcasty Video to też bywa fajna sprawa - jeśli jesteś rządny wiedzy to oglądasz video z konferencji TED albo pytasz Ninje. Przydałby się jeszcze dział taki typowo blogowy. [...]

  15. @Darren

You understand that they have to send out those C and D letters or they will lose their trademark. This is similar to Apple stopping people from using iPod in their products. In order to have something trademarked, you have to actively protect that trademark.

  23. [...] For example, when users submit a valid RSS link, Digg may insist that it is invalid. If this happens, Digg’s instructions say to paste the URL of the page that contains the RSS link in it. However, this does not seem to work very well either. I tried to paste the following URL: http://www.podcastingnews.com/forum/links_tophits.htm, which contains links to several podcasts. Digg did not like this link, could not find any podcast links on this page and didn’t even tell me why. Another issue users may have is the waiting period before the submission is approved. For example, I submitted NASA’s podcast and Digg told me the submission needed to be approved. They didn’t give me any clue as to how long it could take, nor did they give me any indication of IF I was to be notified. It would seem to me that allowing instant submission and enabling users to rate/comment immediately, rather than come back later, is crucial to keeping people interested in submitting podcasts. I understand the need for moderation of content, of course. But why steer away from the original concept of community moderation? With 400,000 users and only 18 employees (as of the last podcast interview) you would think this would be more efficient. [...]

  30. Umm…when did changing the navigation and adding podcasts become worthy of treating this like some sort of worthwhile announcement. New navigation and a couple new features are just boring. Sorry for the tone, but this is the second time digg has been on your podcast and still nothing all that interesting “announced”.

  32. [...] I think Digg is a great tool to spread and share user-generated content. As of Dec. 2006, Digg gets over 10 million unique visitors and over 200 million pages views, according to an interview with Digg execs at TechCrunch. The services and products Digg will be providing will definitely provide value in the future. Look out for great things with this company. [...]
